Technically it is until the next presidential election. IE, say a VP takes over office after the previous president had been in office for 3 years, the new president's term would only be 1 year... ending with the next election. If he were re-elected his 'next term' would start.

4 year term with a limit of two terms, or 8 years, unless the President is finishing out the term of another president for example Gerald Ford. Then the President can serve a total of 10 years.

The term for a president is 4 years but they can serve two terms meaning they can be president for up to 8 years. If they are vice president and the president dies they can serve more i think.

a president is only allowed to serve 2 terms. this rule was made after fdr served 4 terms.
