my daughter and many of her friends loved the I Spy books in first grade- there are many in this series and they now have computer games that would be suitable for 1st grade.

As for board games- the classics, like chutes and ladders and candy land are always winners- Cranium makes some really fun board games suitable for first graders- I am a big Canium not and I have never met anyone that enjoys games that did not like Cranium games, Balloon Lagoon and Hullabaloo are really a lot of fun.

I'd get some standard board games that are quick to play like Connect Four or Guess Who or even Memory.
Books, I'd go with Eric Carle books or Clifford books.
