the railway children
i know that this is a kids book, but i loved the simple story behind it. it shows that life is not always rosy, that people fight, that people do the wrong thing, but also that life should go on and not just stop because of this. i read it many times as a child and a young teenager, and that book had more of an effect on me than any i have read since.

Frankenstein. It's a simple and expected answer but I still think of this book everytime I'm asked, and I've been out of high school for quite some time now. The book addresses the issues of creating life and being responsible for that, as well as all of your actions. It also addresses the idea of not reading a book by its cover, as in, looks can be deceiving. The main character, the monster, was hideous, but developed a fully complex mind and set of emotions, and lived a horrible (short) life. All he wanted was acceptance by his maker, Victor Frankenstein. I actually recently did a COMP 2 college essay over it.

I don't really have a favorite book, but I have a few I like. To Kill a Mockingbird was a really good book (although many people tend to disagree with me). I like the way the narrator injects non biased morality in to the situation as though it is common sense.
Another good book that I liked, which I still can't figure out why is A Prayer for Owen Meany. I think that John Irving (the author) is very smart in the way he connects all of the seemingly unimportant details of the story in the climax of the novel (although I was disappointed with only one part). Overall, very good book.

The Little Prince
Written and Illustrated by
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
It's a simple and very short book, with extraordinary life lessons. The concrete story is wonderful, providing a doorway into a world dripping with symbollism. About a little boy on a journey back to his 'home planet' and his travels to such a place. I cried. It's from the perspective of a man the boy meets while in a desert one year after he travelled to Earth.

The bible.
The reason why it is the #1 best seller ever, because it is the breath and source of abundant life. Because it never changes, it is the same yesterday, today and forever.
