If the dog is healthy and good enough to be shown, $400 is a bargain.

A show whippet wanted for a pet? So it will not be shown anymore? Then $400 isn't too unreasonable depending on location. A show dog, intended for showing and later breeding would be very much more.
If your dog is being sold as a pet because it could not cut it in the show ring, then you'll want to have it spayed or neutered right away. Add that cost into the buying price for the dog.

If you do this, spay or neuter him/her right away. Any whippet selling for that amount is NOT show quality. Could have a fabulous pedigree and show parents, but for $400 bucks? It'll never happen - unless they stole it and are selling a stolen dog. Spay or neuter and keep as a pet. End of discussion.

i think that is reasonable its actually a deal...but you need to ask one very impotant question first...why are they giving him up? write down all the questions you have so you can just ask them at one time...whippets are great...good luck with whatever you decide to do

Depends on its pedigree and what the market for this breed at this age is in your area. Any bet could probably tell you, or a breeder.

Uhhh, the last car we bought 2 years ago didn't even cost that, and we still drive it to work every day.
Guess it depends on your budget and priorities.
