Concentrate on your tasks and learn them better then anyone. Think three steps ahead and know what your manager most likely wants or needs at certain times of the day and week depending on sales. If you at least act like you care and are reliable you will get more attention and better wages in most cases. I have managed rib joints and fast food places and I always try to build a good solid team and look for the ones I think have good work ethics. I then begin to teach them more and explain to them that I feel they would be worthy of advancement if they felt they wanted it. It is a 2 way street here after that. So good luck.

If there are a lot of guests waiting to be seated, work as quickly as you can. Rinse out your cleaning cloth often. Be sure to wash the whole table including under the condiment holder. Pay attention to chairs. Wipe them off as needed. I seat people at the restaurant I work at. The tables, chairs and floor are gross. The busboys and busgirls hardly ever wash their cleaning cloths. They just swipe over the table leaving sticky stuff and other nasty things. I try to walk very fast ahead of the guests so I can swipe off the rice and other stuff. Often I just have to apologize to the guest and go find a cloth and wash the table myself. Half the time the cloth is so dry, I have to go and dip it in the sanitizing solution before I can even wash the table. Sometimes I make a little joke, "We are short on help tonight and the help we do have is not that great." I have mentioned all the above to management without any results. So I just deal with it the best I can. All that for $5.50 an hour!

1. Multi-task. Learn to do more than one thing at the same time. For instance, if you are walking into the dining room from the kitchen to bus a table, keep an eye open for people who are done eating and pre-bus their table. You can do the same thing if you just finished bussing a table and are on your way back to the kitchen.
2. Area around the table. Not only is it your job to bus tables you should also be keeping an eye at the area surrounding the table. Crumbs, napkins, broken glass, etc.
3. Be active during down times. Pre-bus tables, re-fill iced tea and waters, etc.
4. Communicate. With the host, let them know when tables are bussed and ready. The waitstaff, let them know that you topped off their customer's drinks or pre-bussed a table. Most importantly your boss, find out what their expectations are of you.
5. Sense of urgency. Always move fast, but never run.
Good luck

Actually, that first answer was the best. When I was a teenage busser, I busted my butt at a hotel. I made sure no tables were ever dirty for very long. I made the rounds of all the servers stations. Then, when the servers saw how quickly I was working, they started giving me $20 tips, plus an extra $10-20 to completely re-set their stations each night so they could leave and go out drinking. I started doing this for the best servers, and I would often leave with more money than the servers who were just average and not smart enough to pay me to help them more. I still helped them, I just didnt do extra for those servers.

great tips, I have been in the business 27 years, if you want to make the best tips, work 2 weeks at a restaurant real hard, then figure which servers tips you out the best, avoid the ones who tip you the worst and concentrate on the better servers.

Take things both ways.Be as unseen and unheard as possible. Never try to call attention to yourself. Check in with the waitstaff on a regular basis about any suggestions. Make sure they understand that you want them to make as much money as possible. Good luck.
