External hard drives are just regular hard drives inside a portable casing. So, a good brand of external hard drive is the same. Good brands include Maxtor, Seagate, and Western Digital. If you are talking about a casing however, it doesn't really matter. Just make sure it is USB 2.0 compliant and that it doesn't need drivers for standard operating.

a lot of it depends on what you are using. DO you have external SATA ports? or SCSI, or Firewire 400 or 800? or just USB? An external hard drive case is a very simple object, it's what's inside that counts. If you have even a tiny bit of know-how you can build your own and put a much better quality drive inside than comes stock in premade external drives. Go for higher RPM (7,200 or faster) and a large cache/buffer (8 meg or more).
