AVG Anti-Virus Free: Active (full time) virus protection

Also get free Active (full time) spyware protection:
Windows Defender
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
-----------------------------------------------------
Install the following 5 malware detection programs on all systems and run now and at least monthly. Install all 5. Not a replacement for active spyware/virus protection.

Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)
Enable SDHelper, do not optional tea timer. After installation: update + scan + immunize
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

SpywareBlaster: Update then open and click “enable all protection”. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SUPERAntiSpyware free version: (update + scan)
http://www.superantispyware.com/

CCleaner: Do not install toolbar, recycle bin options.
After your computer is clear of malware set CCleaner to clean when the computer starts.
Place cookies you want to keep in the save list.
If you use “Scan for Issues” (registry cleaner) back up registry first and save changes.
Microsoft OneCare Live, run “full service scan” is preferred over “Scan for Issues”
http://www.ccleaner.com/
--------------------------------------------
Run monthly.

Malicious Software Removal Tool (run “full scan”)
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Microsoft OneCare Live, run “full service scan”
Updates windows, virus and spyware scan, disk cleanup, disk fragmentation (if needed), backs up registry and then cleans registry, and checks for open firewall ports.

Rootkit revealer: (advanced) Close all programs first and then run.

Do nothing at this time with the results! Not all results will be malware! Google each result. Log any changes.

Hello,
You can download the latest version of Mozilla Firefox from here http://j.mp/1p6knu4

Mozilla Firefox is one of the world's most popular web browsers and, to me, it's the best.
It's the best choice.

I use a program called AdAware. It can be downloaded from http://www.lavasoft.us. They have a personal version that is free for personal use.

There are also several other good, free programs out there - namely SpyBot Search and Destroy off the top of my head.

SPYBOT: Search & Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org
don't forget to back it up with additional protection with:
AVIRA Anti-VIR Personal Edition Classic from http://www.free-av.com + ZONEALARM FIREWALL (Free Edition) from http://www.zonelabs.com

The one final thing (if you still use Microsoft Internet Explorer) is to swap your browser to MOZILLA FIREFOX 2, which is less prone to getting nailed by the ActiveX controls that Internet Explorer is infamous for letting crap getting downloaded onto your computer in the background without you knowing.

lavasoft ad-aware gets rid of more than just adware....

oh, and spybot is good for the stuff ad-aware doesn't pick up on a standard sweep.

http://www.download.com is a good place to start, but check out the feedback first (if available)

In one word NORTON. I have it on my computer and it is brilliant this is the third year now and I have never had any problems with it. One of the best around.
