There are 52 weeks in a year...a standard pregnancy is 40 weeks, meaning that for 12 weeks of that year you are not pregnant. Divide 52 weeks by 12 months and you get an average of 4.333 weeks in a month. Therefore, 40 weeks is about 9-1/4 months and the remaining 12 weeks is about 2-3/4 months. Technically, nine months is correct. That said, tracking pregnancy by weeks is more accurate (and more important) than months.
Edit to add: Think about it this way, If you simply think of months as 4 weeks long, meaning that 40 pregnancy weeks equal 10 months and 12 remaining weeks equal 3 months, you would come up with a year that is 13 months long! Obviously, that's not right.

Yes. But not like you are thinking. A pregnancy lasts 10 LUNAR months. Like most menstrual cycles follow. A lunar month follows the pattern of the moon and always consists of 28 days, no more and no less. This means that a pregnancy lasts more that 9 standard months (30-31 days generally) but less than 10 standard months. Hope I've helped.

The 4-week-month thing is something doctors use to simplify math. This way, they don't have to account for 28, 30 or 31-day months. Also, you count from your last period's start, so it's easier than trying to figure out the date of conception. 3 calendar months is actually 13 weeks, not 12.
Without it, you'd be saying, "I think I got pregnant somewhere on the 10th thru the 17th, and today's the 1st, but it's March, so what about February being only 28 days...?"
Doctor math goes like this:
The first 4 weeks after your period is the First month. When you reach 4 weeks, 28 days, you are "1 month pregnant". You should be just missing your first period.
After 8 weeks, you're 2 months along. Until 12 weeks, you can say "I'm 2 months pregnant."
And so on... 12+ weeks, 3 months. 16+ weeks, 4 months. etc.
Up to 36-39 weeks - "I'm nine months pregnant". On roughly the 40th week, you should give birth.
The other posts are confusing because when you talk about this stuff and the number of weeks, you have to be clear whether you are using:
(a) Doctor math - weeks since your last period started or
(b) normal calendar - how many weeks/months since conception. (If you know when)
Doctors use doctor math because it's a lot easier to do the numbers and it's consistent.
Notice we say "40 weeks" and conception (usually) happens about 2 weeks after your period, so actually being pregnant is about 38 weeks. 9 calendar months is 39 weeks plus or minus a day or 2. Pretty darn close, when you can deliver in plus or minus a couple of weeks of your due date.

The average pregnancy is 38 weeks to 42 weeks. They just tell you your due date is 40 weeks but 98% of women deliver anywhere between 38-42 weeks, and only 4% of this amount deliver exactly on their due date. This works out to 8 and 3/4 months till about 9 and 3/4months. If you delivered right on due date you would be 9 months and 6 days.

Yes that's right. While we seem to count in months, the doctors count in weeks. So 40 weeks is 10 months. But also, the average woman give birth within the 38-42 week , that's either 2 weeks before your due date (40weeks) or 2 weeks after your due date. Full term reaches at 37 though.

if you count the weeks yes... Because 40 weeks divided by 4 is 10 months... But because they start measuring from your last period and that some months have more and less days it comes around 10 months =)

Yes, pregnancy lasts 10 months. It is a bit confusing but if it helps your due date is at the end of your ninth month, not the beginning so therefore you are due at the start of your tenth month.
Make sense?

It is 40 weeks from the beginning of your last menstrual period so yes it is in a way. It is only 9 months from the actual date of conception though.
