I believe the Theory of Dharma is the key to the entire thing. Dharma is an Eastern Philosophy which theorizes that one can reach a state of perfection.
It seems this Island somehow is attempting to bring these people to that place somehow. Locke seems to be getting it.
Desmond certainly has tapped into something. In this last episode Charley, with the help of Hector had somewhat of an Epiphany that He could either sit and wait for death or grab life by the balls.

WHAT! Last weeks episode was garbage! I could care less about that stupid fat guy and his numbers! They have to stop making those damn commercials where they say "the episode everybody is going to be talking about tomorrow" I hate you lost you have dissapointed me just like life itself. Oh and Heroes ****** rules man!!!

truly i think it will end up someone dreaming it and they will wake up on the plane and the cfrash will just be taking place
