Wow! What a great story. It's the only thing of Vonnegut's I've ever liked.

The theme is the ridiculousness of "equality". The fallacy about equality in the story is that the gifted are dragged down to the level of mediocrity. Notice that no mention was made of uplifting the mediocre, but of handicapping the talented.

Funny that the story was written 45 years ago. It's a cautionary tale in the same vein as "1984" and all too true today.

This one can be complex. On the surface, thematic elements question technology and competition. Dig deeper and issues of family can be explored.

Consider what happens: Eliminate differences so no one ever feels bad. Have someone break through that resistance for a moment, a moment fraught with maniacal overtones, and watch that someone, Harrison, shot abruptly.

The irony, in the end, is that while eliminating the friction caused by difference and exception seems asinine, the one moment of true brilliance is very sinister.
