I lived in the EU for 30 years and I don't think there is a chance in hell of it becoming a solid political union in the foreseeable future, if ever.

If you look at history, you will find that the only political entities which have held together for any length of time are those in which the vast majority of inhabitants have a common language and common economic, social and political objectives.

In that regard, look at the list of casualties after the Berlin wall went down. The Czechs and Slovaks split up. The Serbs, Bosnians, Croatians and Slovenians split up. Montenegro now wants to split from Serbia and the Albanians want nothing to do with the Serbs on the other side. The Soviet Union broke into about a million pieces once the opportunity presented itself.

On a much lower scale, even Quebec has threatened to split from Canada and the Scots and Welsh are troubled by their ties to England.

Why? For some or all of the reasons above. How much more evidence is needed to figure out what is going on? The politicians in Europe have been almost completely irresponsible in their mindless pursuit for a political union rather than limiting the union to an economic one, which is the only one which counts. Are they that desperate for a counterfoil to the USA? Well, you do not want an army which can't communicate internally, has different social and economic values, different histories and different social values. No matter what order you give, the army will go in 7 directions at once. If you ever get to that point, of course. A union would have a common foreign policy, right? And what are the chances of that? Anyone who reads the newspapers can assess that one!

The euro was an attempt to accelerate a process that the politicians did not want to proceed naturally with the desires of the national populations of Europe. And, those cracks are showing now, too.

The chances of a lasting political union in Europe, in my opinion, are somewhere between zero, nil and negligible. Once the issue finally had to be placed in the hands of the people (in a few countries --- in others it never was so the politicians decided), things started to disintegrate. They will continue to do so until the politicians realize that the welfare of the European countries can be be enhanced perfectly well by economic cooperation alone, and can be damaged by a mindless rush to political union.

As I recall, the original name was the Common Market followed by the European Economic Community. Both were excellent economic ideas. Then the politicians hijacked the concept and we have had nothing but problems since. And, if they do not desist, there will be more.

Yes, eventually. Culturally, once countries have spent one or two generations in this model, patriotism will change. Also, it is a fact of european history that economic influence translates to political influence, after a short amount of time. HOwever, I think the UNited Kingdom will withdraw from the EU before it becomes a true political union. Too much national pride, too much to lose, and not enough to gain.

It's already considered a political union in Europe. Since it's development into the European Union, and changing from the European Coal and Steel Commission and the European Community in 1992, it has been a political union, made up of diplomats and democratic practices. Think of it as the United States of Europe.

I think that was one of the intentions of the EU founders. If the EU can truly unify as a country, they will have a stronger economy then the US and China. Which would effectively make them a world power.

Do you mean like a confederacy? I think it is a possibility though I would not forsee some nations joining that. Like say Britain.

it may whether it won't in any respect take place. the persons of Europe, like Greece, Spain, Portugal and eire have had sufficient of being dictated to by skill of Germany, and the German people have had sufficient of bailing out the international locations that are broke. Even the persons of the united kingdom have had sufficient of this bureaucratic agency that rides tough shod over our criminal equipment. Time the politicians listened to the desires of the persons.
