Good question! At that time Russia was a very powerful and advanced country. (It had more railways than USA). But on the social basis it was backward. Peasants and workers suffered a lot from the hand of the aristocracy and rich, they had no rights, nor privilleges - kind of slaves. The other big part that played the role in the russian revolution were Jews. There were many of them living in Russia at that time and they were always discriminated. Thus they were not happy with the leading elites. So - when you look at the people who started and led the russian revolution - nearly all were Jews.

Dear Jaicy: Because if it had broken out anywhere else it would not have been called the Russian Revolution.

There were a lot of reasons, I suppose, but one was the First World War. Poor people (serfs) were getting wiped out by the thousands for a political alliance made by the Romanovs that had nothing to do with the common man.

It was a case of poor folks saying, why am I dying in a rich man's war? Quite sensible, if you ask me.

har har har, funny answer. Because people were a bit pissed off with the tsar, and the class divide was widening, the government was impractical and weak, and there were just quite a few popular revolutionary types hanging round in the right places.
