How many prisoners have you talked to?
I talk to them every day and not too many of them maintain their innocence.
People who are in jail and awaiting trial maintain their innocence because it would shoot any chance in hell of them getting off as is their right and the courts obligation to assume their innocence.
People who are convicted do not normally maintain innocence. In fact if they want to get parole or early release it is in their best interest to admit to their crime and show remorse.
Also, there are many, many, many documented cases of innocent people of being convicted at trial or even pleading guilty or confessing to crimes they did not commit for fear of a worse sentance after a trial....you've never heard of one?

Maybe not EVERYONE. But imagine someone who lives in a bad area- arrested- accused of stealing or worse. They may be innocent but they cannot fight the system. They do not have a voice. There are plenty of people like that in prison. Or the ones who cant afford a very small bail because they just don't have the means to get out of jail. So they sit at Rikers Island for endless amount of time- with gang members and murderers.

It does seem that way, doesn't it? In most cases if they publicly acknowledge that they broke the law, it might mess up their appeal or damage their chance at early release!
Another reason that they cling to a claim of being "not guilty" is they might not consider what they did as wrong. Even murderers and rapists can delude themselves into believing that their victim "deserved what they got". This DOES NOT make them insane ... only too stupid (or self important) to see that they must obey the law or pay the consequences!
Frankly, I'm tired of the bull****! Tried, convicted and sentenced, they have two options. 1) Prove they did not commit an act that is against the law. 2) Shut their piehole and serve their sentence, when they do get out ... don't break the law again!

Well everyone who is being held in JAIL prior to their trial is innocent. Our system says that a person is innocent unless proved guilty so a person who is incarcerated while awaiting trail is innocent
As to those who are then convicted and sentenced to prison. They may claim to be innocent and may even in actuality be innocent but at least until new evidence comes to light they are guilty

Felons grow up with a mentality that they are never at fault for their actions and are always victimized one way or another. If they are victims of anything, it's their own worldview.
