i wan to use it to use it preserve pine wood in place of pressure treated wood and paint over it.
type of primer and paint or will that work?

Thompson"s water seal does not replace treated wood. Modern treated wood is treated with copper sulfates, or borate salts. A water seal is just an oil finish which will help repel water. It does nothing to prevent termite, or any other insect infestations. It also does not protect against mold, or fungi. If that is not enough, It will cost you more to buy the lumber and water seal, than you would have spent on the treated lumber to begin with.

it's not really a wood preservative. I use it on my deck and it looks like you could paint over it when dry, although I never have. I would go with a product that is specific for what you want to do with it.

Once you use it, paint will not adhere well as it has an oily consistency.
Oil paint might work, but I would first try it on a test piece of wood.

Yes, make sure that it is clean and dry. A less expensive but equally good alternative is BEAR OR BARE brand. I used it on my deck and it was good.

thompsan's is nothing but very expensive mineral spirits...read the label....you can do the same with mineral spirits...kerosene...and get the same result...but it has to dry for quite awhile...read the label...you will see that i am right...good luck in your project
