Yes, journalism would be the correct major to match your goals. As you check into various schools, ask some specific questions. Obviously you want to look at schools with a good reputation for journalism. But equally important is finding out if they are geared specifically for writing and reporting predominantly in a newspaper attitude, or if they are also geared for someone wanting magazine writing as well.

The basic writing, editing and reporting coursework should be a fantastic experience not only for becoming a better writer, but also for anticipating ideas for your stories and in developing your skills at multiple methods of fact-finding and information gathering.

You would benefit from a program where there are at least a few advanced courses specifically geared toward magazine. A good program will also have coursework in journalism law and ethics too. You might ask if there are a some alumni from the school who are doing the kind of writing you want to do--could you possibly contact them as you are deciding upon the best school for your needs?

You are aiming for an exciting major. One of the great things about journalism is not only do you develop expertise in your own writing, but you have the opportunity to learn so much about the world because of the people you meet and the stories you write. It is certainly never boring.
