I learned way back when from Lissaexplains.com. It's designed for kids, but she makes it easy to learn the basics of HTML.

HTML is the most basic Programming language ever, it is extremely straight forward. You can get a bit of a crash course at http://www.htmlgoodies.com which will probably cover all that you will want to do with HTML (unless you decide to become a boffin and create professional websites).

The thing I do, because my hobby is to design/program websites, I get a book to learn these things. There is no use to go on the Internet and look at tutorials because you will alwasy be missing stuff. A good book covers every aspect of coding a language and allows you to flick back and use the glossary to look things up. Let's be honest, your not going to find the tutorial that you learnt one tiny bit from when you've learnt bits from all different websites are you!

I learned from a website called Davesite (www.davesite.com/webstation/html)

However, I've found another great resource for learning HTML:
www.w3schools.com

Both of these tutorials contain interactive coding. Davesite is very basic and understandable, whereas W3schools covers every detail that you'd ever want to know about HTML (and other web standards such as JavaScript), but the tutorial is very straightforward and easy to understand.

I learned HTML on my own, no classroom lessons. I started by first looking at the source code, and scratching my head. Go to VIEW / SOURCE and you will see a bunch of unintelligible letters. Each line tells something. I cant read it all, but I have my own webpage in HTML and Tables and CSS Sheets, and java.
I read a book from cover to cover that went over what each tag was for, but the basics are on the web: www.htmlgoodies.com or Google for html basics.
