My memories;late 1990's...
3rd grade: multiplication tables (1-12) and then we learned this really helpful technique in which we could learn the 9 table multiples using our hands.
you split your two hand into different two digits ( one is for ones and the other for tens
(left to right)

for example if the question was 9 X 3 ( you only need to know #3)
you would count the fingers from the left hand to (right if neccesary with number)until you count 3 fingers.then fold that finger.
now look on the left of the folded finger, count the fingers to the left. that numbers goes in the tens place unit.
so it will be 2
now look at the # of fingers to the right of the folded finger and.
there should be 7. thus goes in the ones unit.

so the answer in 27!
