I use to really like smooth jazz but not any more. It's like they're continously crossing over into the R&B, and Hip-hop genres. Now they're starting to cross over into the rap genre? That's where straight ahead jazz differs. The fusion of melodies and rhythms are more complex. Not this bubble gum, watered down version that smooth jazz offers. Comments?

Straight ahead...dirty funky nasty jazz.... smooth jazz is not the real deal and I wish they wouldn't call it Jazz. Give me Miles Davis over Kenny G any day.

When I hear "smooth jazz" I think "elevator" or "waiting-on-hold" -- basically background music. When I hear "straight ahead" jazz I think of virtuoso instrumentalists engaging in dazzling solos over top of solid drum rhythms and bass lines -- up front and in-your-face music.
