Blood oath is when you cut yourself and can either mingle it with someone elses blood or sprinkle your blood on an alter, which is what I am assuming he did since God doesn't have a physical form. I think all it means is that he is very attached to his religion and for some reason felt compelled to make an oath. He probably did it because he was feeling unsure about something and needed an extra boost.

A blood oath is where you swear never to reveal the secrets of the group, and you make a mark or sign your name with your own blood (from a pricked finger or cut hand.

What L was describing is how one becomes blood brothers with someone. Not a blood oath.

Depending on the god it can be very serious. It is a binding oath that lasts a lifetime.
In the old days blood oaths were used to forge a life bond to a person or god. They are not child's play when you make it with powerful beings, one to the man downstairs will end with your soul in hell upon death.

In Star Trek Klingons are always doing this he may be a Klingon fan.

First of all it's a type of pledge. God does not ask us to cut ourselves and let our blood mingle with anothers. If the paper you found states it's a pledge to God he may have wrote that purposely in case it was discovered. How long have you been with him? How well do you know him? Little by little if he is into some type of cult it will show. You may want to speak to someone you can trust, like a priest.

Well, if it's to God, then it should be OK. Usually, blood oaths are a way to "pledge allegiance" (not the flag pledge, I mean) to a god or group. Kinda like, you cut your finger, somebody else cuts his/her finger, and you put your fingers together. That way, your blood mingles and you're bound by shared blood.

Or the blood is a sacrifice, like, "I'm willing to hurt myself in your honor/service."

I guess ask him about it. It could just be some Goth/emo thing--see what he has to say about it. Don't freak out unless you talk to him and he's, like, delusional or something.

But if he were truly delusional, you'd probably know it from his general behavior and attitude and all. Truly crazy people usually aren't hard to spot. Ask him. Ask first, and go from there.
