most instances of higher education include 4+4, meaning four years of college followed by four years of medical school. Most colleges also offer advanced programs like the one in my area that offers a 3+4 advanced program.
Most neurosurgical programs have a minimum of six months of general surgery during internship where you will spend time rotating through various general and subspecialty surgical fields. The remainder of the year will be spent doing neurosurgery and/or neurology, intensive care unit, and other electives.

U.S. neurosurgical residencies are between six and eight years, including internship. Typically most programs require

One year of internship
One to two years as a junior resident seeing consults, doing basic operative and bedside procedures
One to two years of research - some programs allow you to do a fellowship during this time
One year as chief resident
As a more senior resident, expect to have increased autonomy in the operating room, as well as in making patient-care decisions.

If you want information on other surgical specialities here is a list of their respective organizations.

4 years college. 2 years pre med. Then internship. Maybe 8, but I'm leaving out the most important part: The skill and dexterity which you either got our you don't. It's like asking how many years does it take to become an artist. I could spend 10 years in art school and my drawings would still suck.

According to the US Dept of Labor:

How long? 11-16 years:
4 years of undergraduate school,
4 years of medical school, and
3 to 8 years of internship and residency, depending on the specialty selected.

Good luck!

Well, after high school you will generally have to go to a four year college. After college comes medical school. Medical school is generally two years of classes, followed by two years of hands on training at a hospital. You then graduate, but still have to do a four year residency.

About 12 years.
