I'm not sure where to start doing my reseach. If anyone could please help me out by pointing me in the right direction, I would be greatful.. Thanks.

Your local library is the best place.
They will have litrally tons of photo's and info regarding EVERY part of your town.
They have indexing computers and each photo has a ref. number, so all you have to do, is type in the name of your street, it comes up with ref. numbers and you can go from there.
Some people think it takes days to track info like that, but with info and technology at the library, it only takes about 20 mins.

I agree, go to the local land office. Check the Clerk's department of the town office too. Any and all building permits are there for almost ever so anything done since the first build (if it had a permit... tsk, tsk) will be there...

Start at the county clerks office, they typically keep a record of all property transactions. They may only go back around 100 years though.
