He passed away.

"Bonanza" easily survived the departure of Pernell Roberts in 1965, much more devastating was the untimely death of Dan
Blocker in 1972. Before shooting for the new fall season was to commence, he fell ill and went into the hospital for gall bladder
surgery. The operation was a success, but during his recuperation period Dan developed a blood clot in his lung and died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 43. The death of Dan Blocker was a blow from which Bonanza could not recover.
The ratings slipped and. NBC moved the show to Tuesday nights where its competition was "Maude", Bonanza was canceled in January of 1973.

I am pretty sure that he had a heart attack and passed away. He has a son that acts and kind of looks just like him.
