I think homework should only be what the children were not able to finish in class or things like reading or research projects (but not too often!). Too many teachers have specific things set aside as homework to give to all the kids when they go home. It's getting ridiculous because some kids in elementary are ending up spending 2-3 hours a night on homework. After having spent 7 hours at school. 10-hour days? We pay adults overtime if they consistently work that. Kids just get burnout or a lack of interest in learning.
And I think it's ridiculous to say that elementary kids need to start having homework so they'll be used to it in middle school. I almost NEVER had homework when I was in elementary because I finished all my work in class. I was still very able to deal with homework once I hit junior high. It's an incorrect assumption to think a child will not be able to adjust.

Of COURSE they should ban homework! According to Harris Cooper, PhD, 70% of high school students who have homework have better test scores than those of the students who didn't have homework. As for grades younger than high school, homework isn't necessary. Kids already spend 6 to 7 hours a day at school! The other time, they are mostly asleep! They only get a few hours to actually do stuff with their families!

Elementary schools!!?? Just wait until the kids get into Middle School or Junior High. I think teachers get off on killing kids with homework, even on vacation. my child starts H.W. in studyhall and comes home with another 2 hrs or work to go!
Teachers spend a good portion of the school year just teaching the kids how to take the NYS mandated tests that now start in 3rd grade!

absolutely they should ban homework. why do we require our CHILDREN to spend over 8 hours a day incarcerated in a facility, spend hours stuck on the school bus, PLUS require homework? that's more than most adults work. that's cruel and overly burdensome, especially for the younger ones. when are they supposed to get to be members of their families? when can they play? unstructured play time is immensely valuable, and our children are being deprived.
if the school system would actually teach the children, instead of acting as glorified babysitters, it would be unnecessary to require homework.

No way. How would kids learn? People's knowledge needs to be tested so that they can see where they are making mistakes and correct those mistakes. Children are no different. And besides, if elementary schools banned homework, kids would be more likely to rebel against it when they get older. I think it's a silly idea that would get nothing accomplished.

No says I. Even though I hate homework, I have to admit that it does help with our understanding of the subject we're the doing the homework on.

No, if kids dont have homework in elementary school, when they reach middle school they are going to be like why do we have to do this?
Homework has to start sometime, and its better to start in elementary school to get into the routine. How else will children practice what is taught in school?
