Its in the same place is it now, but just before 1939, they got into a bit of a rut. The economy took a nose dive, and France and Belgium seized all of the industry and parts of the country t get even for the WW1.
This destabilized the country so much, that the politics of hate sneaked in. The National Socialist party, led by Adolf Hitler got a small majority, and power. the main drive behind the Nazi's was a belief that they were genetically superior to everybody else. They invented archeology and created myths about the 'Ayrian' race, to try and prove this 'super' bloodline.
They set light to the Parliament building and whilst the building was being re-built, brought in a fist-full of policies that turned Germany into a dictatorship.
Next, the areas of German speaking peoples were seized, and the army, Navy and air force expanded to colossal proportions. The war started when they marched into Poland, and Russia (Stalin) signed a non-aggression deal with Hitler.
Hitler removed all the Jews, Catholic bishops, Gypsies, Socialists and thinkers, and sent them to death camps.

Location: in 1939 the eastern boundaries of Germany looked very different to todays. East Prussia and West Silesia belonged to Germany or Reich as it was called back then. (Today it belongs mostly to Poland and the small part with Koenningsberg (Kallingrad) to Russia). One of the causes of the war against Poland was Nazis request and Polands refusal to create a corridor between Germany's 'mainland' and East Prussia.
Religion: more or less as today, north was Protestant, and south was Catholic.
People: in general majority of people were quite happy with Hitler and Nazis. They had Berlin Olympic Games in 1936, economy was booming, very low unemployment, many state projects such as autobahns (freeway) or housing were constructed, and first Volkswagen (Beetle) - designed by Hitler himself as a cheap car for everyone was produced. So, people were experiencing good life and there was an euphoria (which probably explains why they followed so blindly Hitler...). In addition German women were given special status and were encouraged to have more children. There were of course political problems as someone mentioned before - communists and some priests opposing Nazis conduct, as well as homosexuals and people with disabilities, were imprisoned, while Jews and Gypsis at that time were discriminated, abused and many expelled.

Nazi Germany, Adolph Hitler was pretty much the emporer, or dictator, Adolph was so charismatic that he talked most of the German people into killing Jews, Gypsies, starting a war with USA, etc. Just go to wikipedia.org, and type in Nazi Germany. Its really interesting. Germany believed that they were superior. Like the Nordic Race, as a Master Race. You know blond hair, blue eyes, snow covered mountains, was pretty much there belief in a supreme being. Type in Thor, a Norse God. Was pretty much the backing of Nazi belief.
