Why don't you ask your students for suggestions? However, may I suggest the following books: "Jean Val Jean" by Solomon Cleaver (1935), an English language re-telling of Victor Hugo's classic "Les Miserables".
" I Am David" by Anne Holm (1965). This is a story about a young boy's epic journey across Europe, and his budding emotions and sense of the wonder of life.
My Class loved both those books. Those are great books for teaching character analysis.
Good Luck from a retired teacher - principal.

WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS-its awesome, probably a little easy for them but good to answer questions for.

other good books:

house of the scorpian
summer of the monkeys
island of the blue dolphins
bud not buddy
watsons go to birmingham
my david
LIGHTNING THEIF
the breadwinner
parvana's journey
mud city
crispin books
wrinkle in time (series but it doesnt really connect to the sequels)
flush
hoot

cant think of any others right now but theres some books. im in 5 grade and i read them, so they might be a little easy but theyre good.
