It has to do with letting kids be kids and developing their imagination...we all grow up soon enough and some fantasy is good. However, I do not think it is a good idea to, as you put it "let them depend" on a fantasy. My kids believed in Santa..but we told them we had to help pay Santa's elves so that they also understood value and did not ask for the moon.
P.S. Getting gifts from someone does not necessarily build stronger bonds with them..rather it just becomes expected. Parents generally give a special gift from them as well as Santa..but to me it was the smile on their faces having received that which they wanted rather than caring that they knew it came from me.

I HEAR YA!!!
Santa Clause as we know it (him) today... Is simple marketing launched by Coca Cola a long time ago. Red suit, fat, white hair and beard, all Coca Cola. (saw it on the Discovery channel back in Dec.) I'm not religious, but how the hell does Santa Clause and reindeer have any thing to do with the birth of Jesus?
I have three girls and the oldest is at the age where she knows whats up.. Even at her age, she enjoys going along with the story so her little sisters don't find out.

My parents, especially my mother, were big into Santa Clause, but she always gae us certain presents that were from him and the rest were from her and my dad. She enjoyed watching is go talk to Santa while we took pictures with him and the whole idea of Santa clause tends to make Christmas such a magical time for kids and adults alike. I think it's just a tradition that people enjoy and because so many of us believed in him growing up, it's fun to relive the magic with your kids.

I was raised without Santa. At no point were we allowed to believe in him. I now have three small children (8,6,3) and they believe in him with all thier hearts.
My husband and I still give them gifts from us. Those are wrapped up under the tree. Santa brings them cool stuff and leaves them out.
It makes Christmas magical. There are so many harsh realities, I want my children to believe in magic as long as possible. They will eventually figure it all out. We will then get the credit for those gifts. I am actually dreading that day. I don't want credit for the gifts. I want credit for giving my children memories filled with magic.

the real beginning was in Europe when a rich person gave away toys he himself made on one paticular day=December 25 to children in a little town. Before he died he set-up a business to keep the practice going, He had a white beard and Europeans came to this country with their past and all the true parents continue as they have in the past, and YOU'LL probley do the same thing.

thats actually a really good question. Maybe its because we all love the idea of something amazing happening in our dull world. I myself was never told that Santa was the one responsible and I always had a good holiday.
PEACE.

Why do parents tell children Fairy Tales. They never happened, right???? Parents want to have a good reason to give something nice to their children. Also their parents did it to them too. They enjoyed it, why can't their kids?
