I heard that they hate it when a foreigner wears a kimono, but a Yukata is possibly ok to wear. it's best if a Japanese person or someone who's lived in Japan for some years answers this.

I was in a Japanese hotel that provided in-room kimonos to guests. Don't know if that helps or not. :)

There is no law against you wearing Kimono in Japan.
Everybody can. The question is when and where you wear it.
Even Japanese women don't wear Kimono except on some special occasions. In Japan TPO (time, place, occasions) is very important in choosing what to wear.

you can but you'll really stand out as a gaijin. there's some definite prejudice activity going on over there right now. so be careful.
