1. when you make a cd of 10 or more songs this is called an album. you pick a song from your album to release as a single
this song is made available to radio and for downloading to help sell the album. They actually used to sell 45 inch vinyl records of the singles before there were cds
2. If you belong to a band like No Doubt then you tecord songs withouut the band like Gwen Stefani then this is a solo recording

I think a hit single is any song which is getting a lot of airplay. It used to mean a song that was riding high on the charts but I think that's changed.

A solo record is a song recorded by a person who used to be part of a band. Example: Chris Cornell recorded a solo record after he split from Soundgarden.
