I plan on becoming a psychiatrist, so i know that i should take as many science classes as possible, but i heard from a friend that colleges look to see if you take journalism. I made my schedule for next year (AP Bio, sociology, spanish, journalism, history, english, math), but i can change it at any time this year. Could someone recommend what classes i should take?

Truthfully, I don't think that most future journalists should even take journalism. I've worked in communications all my life -- including a number of years at daily newspapers -- and I've found that some of the worst journalists were journalism majors. Some of the best, meanwhile, had concentrations in history and English. OK, so I majored in Communications/Journalism, but I was fortunate that my professors weren't overly political in their curriculum. Sadly, I think too many teachers/professors today warp future journalists with the wrong ideas.
The question is, as a future psychiatrist, how would journalism help you? I can't think of anything you would accomplish aside from writing a few articles and learning about the history of the modern news. On the other hand, I can see how history (an understanding of the past and how it relates to the current) and English (a grasp of the language and how to effectively use it) would benefit you infinitely more.
And if you don't want to go that route, take tennis. That's what I did my senior year...

the courses u are planning to take are good but yeah college basically needs math and english. When u say journalism that's basically English & literature right but i dont see why u need journalism unless that's ur field of study in college and well yours is not it's psychiatrist so i just recommende the college level english. Try to take courses from social and global a lot as much as u can and if it's avaliable in ur school, like do u guys have something like individuals and families in a diverse society(it's seperate from sociology, at least in our school). Good luck in ur current education and future!

Journalism probably won't be up your alley if you dislike writing, and that extra slot would probably be best suited for another science or something. As a psychiatrist, journalism probably wouldn't be too highly ranked among what you would need to take. I'm a journalism major, and I didn't take Journalism in high school and it didn't hurt me any.

One of the advantages of studying journalism, even if you're not planning on going into the field, is that it will make you a more disciplined writer.
Depending on how thorough your journalism teacher is, it will also introduce you to critical thinking and investigative techniques - all very important traits for doing quality college level work.
It can also give you special insight into how news is gathered, edited and reported.

yeah its a good idea. because this is whats probably going to happen. you take it and you dont need it. or you dont take it and you need it. i'd talk to a school counsler about that, they will give you all of the help that you will need for specific courses.
