A pull-off is when you place two or more fingers on a string and after striking the string, you "pull off" the fingers that are lower on the neck effectively playing more than one note on a single string pluck. NOTE: the notes get lower as you pull off the fingers
A hammer-on is the opposite situation in which you pluck a string and then "hammer" fingers on that string at fret positions that are higher notes than the first one struck.
Hope that helps....

When you see two notes or tabs connected by a line above them you either hammer-on if going up the guitar or pull-off if moving down towards the peg head. To hammer-on or pull-off you pick the first note with your right hand and sound the next note with your left hand but don't pick the string again with your right hand for the second note. I hope this helps and didn't sound too confusing. It's easier if someone shows you.

Just, whack your finger down on the fret and pull it off quick, try doing it near the top of the neck for instand good results, like picking an Am chord and on the first fret (2nd String, note C) whack your finger down and up on it....sorry if that makes no sense!

Pull-Off: Have your finger on the string, pluck it, and pull your finger off half - way through the tone
Hammer On: Have your finger not on the string, pluck it, and half - way through the tone, put your finger on the appropriate fret.
Happy playing! :)
