Tricky. The only decent 400 & 800 male runner I can recall is Alberto Juantereno, due in part I think to the different types of running involved. An 800 runner only has to sprint normally for 100-150 metres at the end of the race but a 400 runner has to sustain it for pretty much the whole race.
The best 200 & 400 runner is obviously Michael Johnson but again I am struggling to recall anyone else. John Regis struggled to move up from 200 and he was raw power.
All things considered, I would have to say the step up from 200 woukld be better as they are both all out power surges.

although you would think the 800-400. as these days the times and race for the 800m is practically a sprint anyway. They have the muscle/speed endurance but look at Michael Johnson who was a wonder at the 200/400, I haven't really seen a successful 800m runner do a world class 400m since KRATOCHVILOVA Jarmila & Alberto Juantorena

i would say an 800m to a 400m. i think that it would be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier for them because they are used to and event that is twice as long. Therefore they will be able to go faster

Good question. I would say a 200 m going up to the 400. It is easier to go up the ladder than go down.
