I've had this problem before.
Let the battery die out of the IPOD, recharge the batter, turn it on and it should be fine.
Worked for me.
Its most likely going through a diagnostic routine.
Again, LET THE BATTERY DIE and THEN recharge. IF there are problems after that, contact Apple direct

Hold down "Menu", and the center button, it should restart. The same thing happened to me last week.

Check to make sure your hold button isn't pressed down.

this happened to me last week - go to apple.com, go to support, then search for "won't turn off". After it's off, go to your settings and changed them to go off when it is idle.
