I learned all of my planets from the Magic School Bus: Lost in Space pc game. Continents aren't too hard to learn. Start by explaining what country we are in... the United States. Then, talk about any other continent you like and help him/her remember them by shape. Shape always seems to work well, because most continents do have an odd shape to them. Africa - long. South America - scrunched up. As for the 50 states, that may take the longest. Maybe print out a map of the U.S., showing just the states. The states are also easy to recognize from the shape. I am from Michigan - a giant glove! For the continents, do the same thing as well - print out a picture (in black and white) of the world, showing just the names of the continents. If it is in color, your child may get confused and remember the continents by color, which won't get him anywhere, considering that most maps have different colors for their continents. Good luck!

-Books are a great way to learn some of these facts. Try Readinga-z.com. You have to pay for the whole service, but they let you download some free samples. Lots of nice books at a wide variety of levels, and your son can color them, underline, highlight, etc.

-Learning lasts longer when it is multi-sensory. That is, people are more likely to remember things when they experience them in a variety of ways. Sadly, all too many classrooms focus solely on the auditory, or listening. You can really help your son to keep hold of these facts by producing them in a different way. So draw planets on the sidewalk in sidewalk chalk, in the correct order. Make a puzzle of the states and capitals, matching them correctly. Cover up the names on a globe and match Post-Its to the continents.

-For worksheets, you can find nice ones at EducationWorld.com. Go to Lesson Planning and navigate from there. They have nice things on many different topics. EnchantedLearning.com also has some...there is a service you pay for, just like at readinga-z, but also some things are free.

I'm a teacher. To get worksheets, I would type in "free", "printable", "worksheets" "3rd grade" and whatever subject you are looking for (i.e. "planets" or "states and capitals") into you search engine and the list of sites will be endless.

Works every time :)
