They are all reasonably reputable brands, and if you are looking for quality, then you shouldn't have a problem with any major brand.
*If you are looking for style, then Sony Vaio and Apple are the coolest, and most stylish, brands.
*Dell and HP / Compaq tend to be good values.
*Toshiba and IBM / Lenovo tend to be more reliable and they have better customer service.
*Panasonic makes a line of notebooks called "Tough Books", which are made with a heavy duty shell and components, so they are the hardest to break. They are used in Iraq.
*Acer and Gateway / E-machines tend to be the cheapest, but you may make trade offs on other aspects. They are still good computers though.
The brand doesn't matter so much as does the components inside. Just make sure the computer is right for your needs. If you get vista, look for a computer with a dual core processor, and AT LEAST 1 GB of memory, with a preference for 2 GB if you can afford it.

its really all opinions. but from my experience working at staples... HP's kick *** and are very attractive, Toshiba's are kick *** but ugly, Acer's suck big time, Sony's are my favorite but are over priced, Compaq are just shitty HP's, dell have great warranties but are ugly as sin, IBM's are iffy, and thats that. go with sony or hp
