Well, technically speaking, sex is the exchange of genetic material of two organisms. Some Microorganisms, though their normal means of procreation is parthenogenesis, which means the "duplication" of itself, sometimes mix their genetic material. This could be described as "sex".
We can safely assume, that hence even one-celled microorganisms do this, that it is a process which occured first very early. So probably some hundreds of millions – if not one or more billions – of years ago, directly after the first microorganisms emerged.

It wasn't invented. They just tried it and it worked. And they didn't have names, because they were primitive lifeforms in the ocean, so there was nobody around to give them names.

This is an excellent question.
It was invented in 1833 by Robert Albertson of Glens Falls, New York. He was alone at the time of the discovery but later his invention was improved with a suggestion by Alice Cornwell of Rochester, New York who he bumped into while waiting to see the stage production of "Frankenstein" being performed at the Gaslight Theater there in Rochester.
Later changes were made by Patrick Fitzgerald and Gerald Fitzpatrick both of Dublin, Ireland.
