They made you use your imagination and had an element of the unexpected - not like nowadays, it's all blood and gore with no real story line - almost comical now not frightening at all.

The writers of those movies, the old classics, knew and understood how to use suspense and let the audience picture for themsleves what was hoeening rather than just shoing the guy gettiing his head chopped off. It was worse (and still is) to see such a thing in silouette than in acutality. For example...the original Texas Chainsaw Masacre has been billed as one of the bloodiest movies of all time...hoever..you never actually see any of the killings...they are all in shadow or silouette...or you see the reactin of the victim...but not the act itself...made it far more disturbing becasue people not only had to picture those things for themselves, but becaused they realized that they COULD picture those things for themselves.
Modern movies rely too much on gore and gross out for effect rather than true suspense and terror....beleive me...I truly MISS the old horror movies

Like the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre? Ha.
Probably because now they over-do the effects and gore.

Maybe because movies like "Psycho" didn't go all out with the gore (although I personally like gore!) but it leaves more to the imagination and can be just as scary...that shower scene had me so freaked out I was scared to take a shower!!

Special effects were so bad, that they relied on mystery and suspense for the thrills, not buckets of blood and cgi

i think there was more of a storyline in the old films because they didn't have all the computer power they have now so you had to use your head as well as your eyes and of course i was much younger then and more easily scared

They were more about pychological horror and today is more about shock factor. Both are good/scary in their own right.
