I was getting new tires at a local shop and a young woman walks in to get an oil change. After checking out her car, it was determined that she also needed head lamp juice. This was going to cost her $45 and was "absolutely necessary for the car to run at its optimum". I just looked at the guy and chuckled...what would you have done???

First, I would have slapped the bastard for thinking I'm stupid. I choose to take my car to have an oil change because I am a very busy person, but I am fully capable of doing it myself. And if she is that mis-informed about her vehicle and was WILLING to just take his word, then her license needs to be taken away. There is NO SUCH THING as head lamp juice or blinker fluid! Plus, these guys should feel awful taking advantage of someone. If they took the time to help people understand rather than screw them, maybe people wouldn't despise them so much.

I think you should have protested on her behalf. If the shop was charging her for that, then they're probably overcharging you as well.

Thankfully, my dad and brothers taught me enough about cars that I could tell shops to go to hell when they'd assume I was an idiot. Once they tried to convince me I needed "special oil" that they wanted to charge $85 dollars for. Not only did I tell them I'd take the normal "cheap" oil, but that I'd also be making a complaint with their headquarters.

You should have been a good citizen. What if that was your sister, daughter, or mother?

Hey hey get this, maybe he was kidding. It could have been a joke. We need to hear the rest of the story. I can't assume she was getting ripped of until we know she did pay for "lamp juice" Okay people, chill out.

Yup...she got ripped off...But I wouldnt have done anything.. Most women..actually most people dont know that car maint. places run 'scams' all the time..you come in for one thing and they try to do 5 things... MONEY HUNGRY! Its happened to me before (when I went to get new tires actually) and they were trying to do all sorts of other things..I said no way.. Most of those things I can do myself.... And Oil changes are rip offs unless theyre done for free at your car dealership..People dont realize simple things like that spark plugs and little things, are so easy (and cheap) to do on your own!

If I had witnessed that I would have told the woman what was going on and I also would have told the mechanic to forget about my car and taken it somewhere else to get new tires. That way he loses two customers and maybe then he'll think twice about doing that to someone else again.

The best response would have been to the mechanic. " My husband just changed that juice last week but if you run back to your parts department and get me a small can of elbo grease, I'll just be on my way."

Lol you are kidding right? I read something like that on that click and clack site, some girls boyfriend topped off her headlight fluid and charged her for it and her dad told her to dump him. hehe.

All I have to say is that if anyone really fell for that, they should not be driving, they shouldn't even own a car.

I would have just told them my hubby wanted to change the compression in the muffler bearings before adding headlamp juice.

Definitely speak up! What if it was your sister or girlfriend or even your friend that was getting ripped off? It is about time that some business are exposed for their scams.
