A friend of mine told me today that she had some eyelashes just fall out. Apparently they are in one spot, but with make up on you don't notice it. Has anyone ever heard of this or know what causes it. She is in her late 30's. What is alopecia? I. apparently have an old dictionary and it is not in there
Thanks

Alopecia areata is a disease that affects the hair follicles, which are part of the skin from which hairs grow. In most cases, hair falls out in small, round patches about the size of a quarter. Many people with the disease get only a few bare patches. Some people may lose more hair. Rarely, the disease causes total loss of hair on the head or complete loss of hair on the head, face, and body.

Sounds like she damaged her eyelashes, not a result of a disease or disorder particularly if it only occured in one spot. This is actually normal and they will grow back.

However, when eyelashes fall out in clumps, you may be experiencing a condition known as alopecia areata, which can be temporary. It can involve hair loss on your scalp or your body. Its specific cause is unknown.
