The revived KKK began in 1915, almost precisely 50 years after the end of the War between the States, and a couple before the US entered the Great War. I imagine immigration had something to do with its popularity, but really it gained many adherents in parts of the country that were scarcely affected by immigration. I think it peaked about 1925. I remember as a child being shown the house that had been the Klan headquarters in Milwaukee, of all places. Anyhow it quickly deteriorated, at least in the North, where pretty much all it did was march around once in a while, into a business that sold silly outfits. It was viewed as harmless nonsense, even by families like mine, which was Irish and Polish Catholic.

Yes. The Americans took an increasingly nationalistic and isolationist view after the treaty of Versailles and this caused the KKK to pop up for the second time. Though this time around it was not only anti-black but anti-Jewish, Catholic, eastern european, Darwinisim and much more. Also, the Klan's rise to power lasted for a very short time, only a year or two.

Anti-Semitism is what I believe fueled the rebirth of the KKK. Apparently it was really big here before WWII, we just never resorted to drastic measures like Hitler did.
