I agree with pinktoni; it's not really about fear of alienation so much as about effectively communicating what you have to say in a way that everyone can understand. Communication skills are an important aspect of both work and social life.It can be frustrating at times to have to do so, but it's generally just as frstrating for the person who is trying to understand what you're saying but can't for whatever reason. It's better to clearly communicate what you have to say so that everyone understands you, because you're just going to be asked to clarify what you mean if you don't anyway.

Hell yes. I am an awesome Vet nurse and i am smart and sometimes to fit in (as it is a persons number one need), you have to pretend you don't know much to keep a conversation going.
It can also be an act of being humble as well. I know we shouldn't care what people think but no matter how hard i try it does bother me when someone doesn't like me. I am a confident women but i like to be liked what can i say.

I don't care about being alienated.
but I do have to simplify (and repeat and repeat and repeat) what I'm saying to my co-workers because English is a second language to all of them.....

Quite frequently. I have only one friend that I can actually talk to without having to simplify everything. She's the only person I can say the word "kiosk" to, and she knows what it means.

Not necessarily being alienated, but it is just easier to speak slowly and use small words, because if you don't, you'll just have to repeat yourself anyway.
