Speilberg is widely acclaimed as the best because he not only has major blockbusters, he also tackles intense social issues. He pleases the average movie goer, and he uses his fame and position to educate and make a statement about issues that he believes in.

I think Lucas is the best storyteller. His 2 big trilogies alone are just phenomenal. Blockbusters all the way. (Star Wars and Indiana Jones)

Not on your list, as of lately, I've enjoyed a lot of Bryan Singer's movies. X-men and Superman specifically, but I just noticed that he also did THe Usual Suspects which I thought was brilliant.

Steven Spielberg. He keeps his films as realistic as possible using the least amount of CGI as possible. Had George Lucas directed Saving Private Ryan, he would have loaded it with computer generated images. Steven Spielberg uses orthodox techniques as well as some unorthodox techniques. EX: In the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan, a lot of soldiers lose limbs. To do this, Spielberg actually hired amputee stuntmen fitted with prosthetic limbs. To film the battle sequences, he uses no dolly and removes the lens protector (if blood gets on the lens, let it be; very realistic). He desaturates the film celluloid itself down t o about 30 percent of its original color to mimic the original look of 1940's style documentaries on the war. They don't teach you that type of thing in film school. Father of modern cinema, greatest director of all time.

Definitely Steven Spielberg!! Do you see the money making machine he is with all his movies?? He's the king! George Lucas is pretty good, but I didn't like the last Star Wars movies as much as the originals...

Alexander Payne, I just like the way he brings dry humor into his direction, especially with "Election".
