Well i suggest that you go to http://www.craigslist.com
It's not a bidding site, more of a wanted ad listing site, broken down by your specific geographic location, it should be easy to find an old computer.

If you don't care how incredibly slow it will be and the fact that it won't be able to run any modern applications. (i.e. a computer at 100mhz would only be able to run DOS or Windows 95 at the most) You would not be able to connect to the modern internet (no broadband ports... only dialup for you) And you wouldn't be able to load most websites (at the website scripting has become more complex and wouldn't be compatible with windows 95 nor versions of internet explorer that are compatible with win 95) In addition you would only be able to use Office 95, the version that came with windows 95. good luck.

Sure. Here's what you need to do:

RESEARCH!

Example1: corporations (legally) can NOT just throw computers (laptops too) in the garbage due to their toxicity; instead, these computers get donated to organizations that refurbish them and sell them for almost pennies on the dollar. If you have corporations where you live and they've needed to upgrade, there might be a computer recycling center *right in your own town*.

Example 2: One good site for finding out what's being bought and sold locally is www.craigslist.org

Example 3: I don't know (or care) why you have skittishness about eBay (after all, you're attempting to purchase a laptop for a hundred dollars; you can hardly be 'cheated' as that's about the bottom of the barrel), but if it has to do with not having a credit card...you may not have noticed that there are sellers willing to accept a Money Order in lieu of Pay Pal--and many sellers offer a "buy it now" price (though those tend to be more than I care for) . If you can scape up $100, you can get a money order for it.

Example 4: Have you asked any of your *neighbors*, fellow church members, co-workers, the pharmacist at the drug store? You can have more assurance buying from someone local that you know (not to mention saving shipping costs).

Example 5: If you have done some research on laptops vs. desktops, you'd realize that desktops are more plentiful, affordable, easier to upgrade and less fragile than laptops; and since you're looking for an old laptop with at least a 100mhz (which will be quite old) the chances are 10-to-1 it's battery won't be able to hold a charge for very long (if at all)...so it will end up sitting on a desk anyway.. like a Desktop...for which dollar-to-dollar, you could have gotten a much more powerful Desktop with more capabilities then your permanently parked laptop.

P.S. Since you want to get (o)ne 'just as a word processor', did you even consider searching for *word processors*? I imagine someone close to you has one in their closet or basement that they've just neglected for the past several years--and it still works.

Unlike you, who does no research!

You can keep your 10 points; I'm disgusted.

either a piece of crap laptop that take 20 minutes to start up and ebay if so not a chance because there will be like 100 bids if it is a good laptop if it is a horrible laptop that takes 20 minutes to start up take a swing at it

any laptop you can get for less than $500 is worthless. i won't have much of anything that will do you any good. pay for a good on and be done with it.
