Lent is supposedly a serious time, including fasting (but fasting doesn't really mean fasting) and prayer. At one time, the Catholic Church charged for people's being able to eat butter during Lent. Now, it's pretty well watered down, at least in America--people may give up chewing gum for Lent, for example.

In Western Christianity, Lent is the forty day period preceding Easter lasting from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday.

The forty day period is symbolic of the forty days spent by Jesus in the wilderness and possibly the forty hours he spent entombed. The number forty has many other Biblical significances: the forty days Moses spent on Mount Sinai with God; the forty days and nights Elijah spent walking to Mt. Horeb; God makes it rain for forty days and forty nights in the story of Noah; the Hebrew people wandered forty years traveling to the Promised Land; Jonah in his prophecy of judgment gave the city of Nineveh forty days grace in which to repent..

The purpose of Lent is to reflect on Jesus Christ. Jesus died so our sins could be forgiven. He resurrected from the dead, and He taught us how to love and forgive.

basically, during Lent, people give up things for penance. My friend gave up chocolate, cursing, and some other things that are bad. Only for 40 days though.
