This is one of the main dilemmas faced by new NCO's. As a fellow NCO, I can understand how hard it is to gain control over a large group of teenagers.

As a newly promoted Cpl I'm afraid that asserting your authority is vital; at least only for the first few weeks. As I'm sure you have probably noticed the cadets will test the boundaries to see how far they can push you without incurring any punishment. Such behavior can only be eradicated by using a "Nip-in-the-bud" approach; standing your ground and letting them know who wears and has earned their stripes.

I'm not saying shout at cadets all the time, you do want to earn their respect and don't forget - they do attend with the intention of having fun after all!

Remember, you are a role model now, so act responsibly and be as approachable as possible. Put yourself in a cadets shoes - if you were a cadet with a problem, who would you rather confide in: a narky Cpl who scares you a bit, or - a cpl who has a laugh but doesn't take any crap?

Most importantly, have fun yourself. Being a Cpl means that you are the link between the cadets and the SNCO's. I think creating a balanced relationship with the cadets would prove the most effective leadership tactic; be friendly, crack jokes, get to know the cadets, instruct and lead.

Good luck!
If you need any more advice give me an email and I'll be happy to help! :)
