For example, if the word "north" was being used in context, would the "n" be lower case or capital (n/N)?

You capitalize north when you use it to refer to the North-as in New York, Michigan, etc. I don't think that you capitalize north when referring to the cardinal directions, though. Same with the direction "west" and the "Old West." You capitalize the place, but not the direction.

I don't think you don't capitalize "northern." It's just lower case.
