Rapidly lowering air pressure as you rise forces air inside the canal (which is at ground air pressure at first) to release back passed to ear drum - hence the noise

As the elevator rises the pressure on the inner ear gets higher and causes that thin membrane to push in toward the inside of your ear this creates that popping sound, when you go down it does it again the other way around.

properly ive in no way journey it in a elevator yet making use of up the mountains or of path on a plane or while scuba diving. Its because of the fact the tension exterior and interior your ears could be equivalent, too a lot vertical flow will reason the tension ranges to alter rapidly, devoid of this air escaping interior your head eg. for the duration of your nostril will reason the popping sensation its style of a confusing question yet i'm hoping this helps beside im in basic terms 15 lol so i don't understand too a lot on it
