Just saying something is a virus is not accurate. There are many forms of Malware and viruses are a very small part of them. Without additional information I recommed you tell her to do an online scan at both of these sites. If anything cannot be removed, write down the name exactly as the program lists it. Post a new question giving the name of the infection(s) so you can be directed to programs that will remove them.

Here are two online scan sites that are very good. She will be required to download a Java Kernal or an Active X to use them. Tell her to do it.

Norton normally "quantines" any virus that is found.
I have yet to see Norton actually "cure" a virus.

There are removal tools, etc that can be used depending on what kind of virus it is.

Norton can tell you the name of the virus, and then you go to norton's site, and lookup the virus for a removal tool or info on how to remove it in general.

Go to download.com and search for AVG antivirus and download the full free trial of that program, then perform a full system scan and it should find it.
Don't forget to update the virus definitions through updating the program before you run the scan

Of course there is.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.
