A Brother is a very good machine. You should have received an owners manual with it; I suggest that you read through it to get a general idea. You don't say if you've ever sewn before (so forgive me if I'm assuming that you haven't). You can go to any fabric store and get material for as little as $1.00 a yard and an inexpensive, simple pattern (read through the pattern for some expert tips). Start with a scrap piece of fabric and practice using all the stitches the machine has. If you don't want to do this on your own, try calling stores like Joanne's etc to see if they have classes. Of course, there's always the Internet as well. There are hundreds of sites to teach you any step to sewing. Have fun learning, the possibilities are endless.

I LOVE my Brother machine!! I use it for my heavy fabric (I made a Levi rag quilt out of my late husbands Levis for each kid) it has never given me a bit of trouble!! I am old and I do love to teach the younger people how to sew - it is fun - and keeps me company.
But if you don't have someone to teach you - you can find a good basic "Learn to Sew" book and along with your booklet that came with your machine - sit and go thru it page by page. (start with the machine booklet first so you know the parts and names). Then for your first project start with something simple - like a plain block quilt. Good Luck!! P.S. If you get stuck and have a question e-mail me and I will be glad to try to help you!

Brothers are good machines.

Many fabric shops have beginner sewing lessons. Check with Joanns, Hancock's, etc. You may also want to check local quilt shops.

Someone mentioned starting with a pattern. I personally do not suggest that if you have not sewn before. There will be some basic seams you will need to learn that a pattern will assume you already know.

Good luck!

Find a fabric store and check to see if they give sewing lessons.

Most elderly women know how to sew also. Ask someone at church.
