Unions caters to those they represent. Take, for example, an auto worker's union. they negotiate higher wages for the auto workers. This adds to the cost of the car.

as each car requires 30 or so hours of labor, the cost is minimal--
each dollar per hour won by the unions adds $30 to the sticker price. But, that's $30 extra out of your pocket every time you buy a new car.

Unions, like any organization, can get greedy or corrupt. Many unions have been associated with organized crime, AKA, Jimmy Hoffa.

Are unions "evil"? That depends on how you define evil. Do they intend malice towards the end consumer of the union worker's goods? I imagine not. Do they exist to (greatly) benefit the worker at the (small)expense of the consumer? Yes.

Unions succeed because workers know they can't rely on consumers to act in unselfish ways. The rational consumer will seek out the best value, even if that means the product is produced with low wage labor, the rational union member will seek to ensure every worker in the industry is unionized so the best value still provides union wages.

Because useless people can live off the few hard workers that are in the profession. The people that have talent and are effective do not need unions. Their value to the company insures their advancement. Notice the outcome of union protection. Lazy employees that hide behind the union protection when they get nailed for poor performance. Bargaining with a union is more paying off the leadership than dealing with the members.

Union Jobs have strict guide lines, and have gotten a bad rap, because they just don't do what they were set out to do when originally created. Fair pay. Fair working conditions.

ALL Unions are not Evil. The Senate voted for Airline Screen's to organize for very good reasons. You must have read an opinionated journalists, who was a liberal, but not in the sense of politics. The actual screening at Airports is of paramount concern for the Safety and well-being of citizens and visitors to our Country.

Think about what you read. Hey, I've gotten myself upset before too reading some of the idiotic media releases, and editorials before I use my good sense to think about it.

Clue: 9/11

They are successful because of money and forced entry. If you work in a state that has unions you must join and pay dues even if you are opposed to the union. While a union will try for years to unionize a company, try to vote them out and all hell breaks loose. Then with your money, that you have no choice over, they ply politicians to keep and expand thier base. If tommorrow all union workers could leave the union if they so desired, they would lose over 50% of their workers and that is why they dont allow anti union votes.

I wouldn't say that they are so successful in today world. At one time I believe that something like 30 - 35% of workers were union members and today it is in the single digits. Does that add up to success? Not in my book.
Unfortunately at one time they did have clout. They provided workers with good wages and health care and pensions. However like every other success they let success go to their heads and started demanding concessions that industry couldn't meet and their jobs were out sourced to other countries or to non union states.

Actually, union membership has been falling for a number of years. Also, success doesn't guarantee a moral quality.
