When we moved in our landlord told us he wasn't going to sell the house for atleast a year. We have only been here since Oct. Today we called him to ask permission to put carpet in and he said he was settling the house. Any good ideas on how to handle this? Only serous answers please. I will report abuse. Has this happeneds to anyone else? how did you handle it?

He didn't want to mess with a lease. He also doesn't want us to buy it.

If you have a lease then the new owners should respect the lease. My landlord sold my place to another person and that is what happened. I moved in October and by June of the next year the place had a different landlord. However, it did not change my arrangement. Just changed who I made the check out to.

What do you mean, "handle this?" If you have a lease, you dont have to move. The buyer has to inherit the renters with the house and honor the leaes until the expiration date.
If you dont have a lease, you'll probably be expected to vacate at the time of sale. If you dont have a lease, you might as well move now or you hae to constantly have people (buyers) looking through the house.

Can you buy the house? You are already living there. Maybe you can make a deal with the owner. If he/she has a real estate person.. call them and use them to handle the deal for you also... since you don't have to pay 3% for your sales person. that you won't have Ask the real estate person to ask if the owner will contribute 3% toward your closing.
This could be a blessing in disguise.
I just bought a condo using that method. Good Luck

Well best thing to do is talk to the landlord and ask him who's buying it. Maybe they are buying it as an investment. Once you know who the buyer is talk to them and find out if they will rent it out or do you have to move out. The only thing I can say is hope that they ae buying it to rent it, that way you get first chance at it. But as something you can do about it that's about it because it's the landlords house and he can sell when ever he thinks he should.

ok this is the WEIRDEST thing thats happened to me!!!! i am going through the EXACT situation. my landlord called two days ago and was all hey i sold the house so we have to get in there for an inspection on Thursday im like um ok? thanks for the notice!! but its not going to effect your lease or anything in any way. talk to the new owner and ask him if you can put the carpet it probably wont be a problem we just re did our yard and the plants were all dead before we moved in so actually it benefits THEM when you make their house look better.

Since you don't have a lease...your kinda screwed. You are considered a "tenant at will" or "month to month" tenant. Under most state laws..he only needs to give you a 30 day notice to vacate. He might even force you to allow the property to be seen by prospective buyers..in which case you would have to allow this as long as he gives you reasonable notice...usually 24 hours.
Good luck.

Legally, it's his home, and he can sell it.
He does have to provide you plenty of time (at least 30 days) to find another place to live and to move.
It does suck for you, and I'm sorry. I had a landlord do this once to us.
The big thing is to make him give you a notice - in writing. That he didnt' tell you until it just kinda slipped out makes me think he would have gone ahead and started showing the house and putting it on the market. He can't put you out, he can't tell you you have two weeks to move out (especially if you have followed your rent agreement, paying on time, caring for the property, etc.)
Best of luck to you.

He has to give you 30 days notice or whatever it says in the lease. You can't count on his verbal agreement not to sell the house.

Did you sign a lease? If so, read it carefully. If it isn't in writing, you are probably out of luck. Small claims court would take it.

check any agreement paperwork signed with your landlord, if you don't have anything in writing backing up what you are saying, it is as good as lying.
you should move to hawaii, i love it here! Property is actually really affordable.
